Musicians make CD as tribute for troops

Web-posted Sep 8, 2004

Special to The Daily Oakland Press

"I don't have to be there tonight and I don't have to prepare to fight/I don't have to be scared if I might live or I might die tonight."

Those are the lyrics to the single "Thank You Jo(e)," heard among the guitars as well as the heartstrings of the nation.

Larry Decker, Mike Sackey and Bob Livernois, the musicians of Detroit-based The Shy, have come up with their own way to support and pay tribute to soldiers in Iraq and elsewhere in the world.

Their two-song CD of acoustic rock music is being distributed free to servicemen, veterans of any war and their families nationally and internationally upon request as well as being sold on the Web site for $5.

"Our mission is to get in the hands of every U.S. Serviceman and Servicewoman and/or their families, a free copy of this Tribute CD," says Livernois, the band's bass guitarist and background vocalist.

The band stresses that the song is neither pro-war nor anti-war and aligned with neither Republicans nor Democrats.

"After Sept. 11, 2001, we all came to appreciate the sacrifice that the men and women in uniform make for our country, regardless of political beliefs or sentiments on the war," Livernois says. "We decided to thank them in our own way, through music, which is the language that we speak."

The trio has financed the entire project out of their own pockets and is putting all the proceeds from the sales back into having more CDs made to send to the troops.

The group also is actively seeking a corporate sponsor to support their mission.

"We are currently on our second batch of 1000 CDs being distributed," Livernois says. "The responses have been literally overwhelming from families and troops alike. They are, without question, some of the most passionate people we have ever met."
