March, 1995

To Members and Friends of the Turtle Lake Improvement and Protective Association:

Now that spring is rapidly approaching (we hope!), we wanted to let you know of upcoming events. In the month of April, the following activities are taking place:

On April 7 and 8, the annual Wisconsin Association of Lakes meeting will be held in Stevens Point. All are welcome to attend; please call Mary Baas at 708/632-0331 if you would like additional information.

Buoy Placement Day will be held Saturday, April 22. We will meet at 7:00 a.m. in front of Pauline Klitzkes house on the north shore. Please mark your calendars and plan to attend; this only takes an hour of your time, and is a good way to meet your lake neighbors. Those with boats are especially welcome - look for the picnic table with the hot coffee and rolls! There will be a board meeting following completion of buoy placement. All people interested are invited.

An "Open Book" session at 11 allow property owners to review current tax assessments is being held on Saturday, April 29 at the Richmond Town Hall from 8:00 a.m. until noon. If you find it necessary to contest your assessment, you will need to meet with the Review Board on Saturday, May 6. It is suggested that you bring evidence to show that your property has not been assessed correctly. For your information, Richmond Township properties will be reassessed sometime between the Spring and Fall of 1995.

Some additional information regarding lake happenings:

Allen and Linda Friedman's request for the expansion of the mobile home park on the north side Turtle Lake has been approved by the Walworth County Zoning Board, subject to certain conditions.

At our February meeting, Donald Roecker of the Walworth County Metropolitan Sewer District gave a presentation so that we could learn more about the complex issue of waste management in and around our lake. Over 30 interested people from our lake and the surrounding area attended. Some of the items discussed were engineering studies that would be required, costs and feasibility, financing, and on-going system operation and maintenance. The Association will be asking for property owners opinions as to whether to we should pursue further professional guidance. Of those in attendance, there was a strong feeling that we need to protect our lake environment by bringing a waste management system to the area. We hope to hear from each of you regarding this subject.

The Board is requesting that Richmond Township provide a Lake Patrol boat at various times throughout the summer, to ensure that we have a safe boating season.

A fun, one-day activity has been planned for June 24, 1995 - we are pleased to announce the FIRST ANNUAL TURTLE LAKE CARP-A-THON. The purpose of this "fishing derby" is to rid the lake of as many of the undesirable carp as possible, because these bottom feeders tend to stir up the lake bottom and can reduce the water clarity and number of game fish. The results of this fishing derby may also help us secure grants from the DNR or the State of Wisconsin for continued lake improvements. Watch for details in an upcoming letter - prizes will be awarded so brush up on your carp fishing skills! In addition, the Annual Meeting of the Association will be held on June 24 at 6:00 p.m. at the Richmond Town Hall.

Sincerely,

Chuck Oswald, Publicity Chairman
