Turtle Lake Association
Newsletter
Winter, 2002 rekaye.home.mindspring.com/TLA.html Editor: Rob KayeHello and welcome to our first newsletter of the year. We hope its been a good new year for all. Since last we "spoke" (and we're sorry its been so long!), much has transpired in Association business. Besides three board meetings, Milfoil spraying has been organized for May, the county lake association has been getting organized, and some of us are getting ready to head off to Green Bay for the annual Wis. Assoc. of Lakes convention.
Committee summaries
Usually we would summarize the board meetings here (9/15, 11/17 and 2/9/02), but since so much has transpired, we'll instead summarize items of importance
Treasure's Report
Balance on hand as of 2/9/02 $4607.96
All outstanding bills are paid.
Full reports can be found at the web page or sent by mail by calling Rob
Milfoil
A group petitioned the Richmond Town board for funds for spraying. $1600 were budgeted. The TLA board voted to supplement these funds with additional dollars if needed. Dick Gronert has been working hard getting the needed signatures from property owners to spray in front of their shoreline. We will be working with Linda at Snug Harbor to insure boats moored there will be moved before the spraying date in May.
Continued vigilance is needed in the fight against the milfoil. Please report any sightings of live Milfoil to Rob at (847) 895-1149 or rekaye@mindspring.com, or Dick and Elaine Gronert at rrgeg@elknet.net.
Membership
Chairwoman Patricia Carroll reported that "welcome packets" for new residents have been prepared. These will detail conservation suggestions along with lake regulations.
By-Laws
The By-Law committee has finished reviewing the By-Laws, making minor changes to reflect the changes in current residents and membership. They have submitted a final draft for the board's approval. The changes be mailed to all members in late May for ratification at the annual meeting
Land Report
The Vander Veen farm (the potato farm) has been purchased by the DNR for conversion back to wet lands. This will help greatly to keep Turtle Lake as clean and balanced as it currently is. Part of the Grossman property has been sold, but the owners have declared their intention to use it for personal use only. Hopefully the south side of the lake will remain natural for years to come.
Neighborhood Watch
Here is another reminder to watch out for your neighbors. Make sure you have traded phone numbers, and let them know when you'll be gone. Lets all keep an eye out for one another!
Lake Conference Information
Three board members along with the Gronerts and Scott Porter will be attending this year's Wis. Lakes conference in Green Bay. From March 7-10, we'll be learning about more ways to help steward Turtle Lake, along with general news on the state of lakes in Wisconsin. We'll report back at the May meeting, along with having a summary for the annual meeting in June.
Walworth County Lake Association
The WCLA organizational meetings have continued since last year, focusing on getting a 100% turnout from lakes in the county. As their first attempt at being a resource for the lakes, a open session was held with the two DNR wardens who answered many questions, both boating and non.
The group will meet next on April 13th. Rob Kaye is still the TLA rep to WCLA, and will report back as needed.
Lake Classification
TLA board secretary Mary Baas has been investigating Lake Classification. This is a way to help keep our lake as undeveloped as possible. Unfortunately, it must be spearheaded by the county, and they seem unwilling to work on the issue. We will keep abreast of developments.
Annual Membership Meeting
Mark your calendars now for the annual membership meeting and Pot Luck Dinner. The date is June 30th at 6:00pm. As usual, bring a dish to pass, along table service for you and your family. We'll be updating everyone on what has been going on, voting on the by-laws, then getting to an open session for comments. We've been discussing ways to make the meetings more "enjoyable" for everyone. We promise to do our best!

Hellos and goodbyes!
The Connell's on Anderson Dr. have left our lake. We'll miss Marge's big smile, and the sudden appearance of 20 red-headed folk on the pier! Good luck to them. Elaine Gronert's brother has bought the Connell's place, and is doing major rehab work on the inside. If he is half the person Elaine is, the lake will be a better place. Now we just have to stop Richard from influencing him....
Do you have any interesting notes and tidbits? Send them to any address you find in this newsletter! We'll include them in the next mailing.
