Security Audits

Since 9/11, security is on everyone's minds these days. If 9/11 taught us anything, it is that you can never let your defenses down. The same concept also applies to computer security in today's digital world. With the increases in identity theft, computer hacking for profit, spamming and worm infections, computer security can no longer be taken lightly.

If you have a high speed Internet connection and do not have a firewall installed, you need to call me. Even if you have a dial-up Internet connection, its a good idea to install a firewall program. If you already have a personal firewall and antivirus software installed, its still a good idea to have a security audit performed at least once per year. This is the best way to be sure that you are doing everything you can to protect your computer and its data.

What is a security audit you ask? Basically a security audit includes:

  • Checking that the latest service packs and Microsoft updates are installed.
  • That a firewall is installed and working properly.
  • Shutting down risky or unnecessary Windows software and services.
  • Cleaning out Adware and Spyware. Installing prevention software.
  • Checking whether your antivirus software is updating and working properly.
  • On wireless networks we check to make sure that either the WEP or WPA encryption service is activated.
  • Removing any unnecessary network protocols and services.
  • Running a vulnerability scan. This checks for exploitable software on your system.
  • Running a bot check. Hidden "bot" programs are now a greater threat than most common viruses.
  • Performing a Rootkit scan. These bugs are definitely worse than common viruses.

Please call today for a complete low cost security audit, whether you own one PC, or several.
