The Wayne County Press was founded in 1866 by David Wright Barkley.
There have been only five publishers during the paperís 135 year history:

    David Wright Barkley1866-1887
    William Goudy 1887-1909
    E. H. Childress 1909-1943
    T.O. Mathews 1943-1985
    Tom Mathews Jr. 1985 to present

The paper is currently published twice a week, on Mondays and Thursdays. It has a circulation of about 7,800 with some 2,000 copies mailed to subscribers out side of the County. The usual issue of the paper is 24 pages. The Wayne County Press runs an annual "Pink" edition in February of each year. The "Pink" edition features letters and photos from readers who nolonger live in the County.
