Freud believed that a certain amount of fetishism is present in "normal" love relationships (as opposed to what he considered to be pathological relationships).  He believed that it becomes pathological when the fetishized object (or part of the body) replaces what he called the "normal aim."  Dream analysis helped him discover when this malady was present in the lives of his patients.
