The body is studied and displayed.  It is fetishized and controlled; transformed by gender and culture.  It is not only considered the possession of the self, it participates in the mystery of dreaming with its nightly sensations and excitations. 

The fetish is the embodiment of the gaze.  Although belonging to the "other," however, the gaze is not anthropomorphized by the fetish.  We are not "called into being" by this desire.
